Copper mining at Bingham Mountain, Utah began in the mid 1800’s and it is now one of the world’s largest open pit mines. Over the years the mining process has removed the original mountain, because such large quantities of ore are required to make a modest amount of pure copper. This sculpture is a model of the material removed from the Bingham Canyon mine site. More than 1000 cubic feet of earth were mined and underwent mechanical, chemical and electrical processing in order to create enough copper for this model.
